Review: At first glance, the maps appear to be simple enough to understand. The colors used could be easier to follow for the violent crime rate maps for 1995 and 2005. The map showing the change from 1995 to 2005 fails to show change for many of the states due to the divisions in the legend. The number of divisions should be equal across all the maps, for aesthetics and consistency. Instead, the two crime rate maps have 5 divisions while the crime change map has 6. This may be a simple oversight, but the first division on the 1995 crime rate map is 86-283, while the first division for the 2005 crime rate map is 98-283. Ideally, the divisions should all be the same.
Overall, this map succeeds in its mission to show the crime rate from 1995 to 2005 and the amount it has changed between those times. The map is pleasing to look at and is not complicated to understand. The title and subtitles on all the maps clearly show what the map is trying to present. Using the map, it is easy to see what areas need more effort to combat crime and which crime fighting strategies are succeeding. However, some basic features of a map are not present, such as a North Arrow and a Scale, although these are not completely necessary given the context.
